What is a Hard Mod?
A hard mod is a permanent or semi-permanent modification inside the figure or base, for example:
Replacing or bypassing the original Hot Toys electronics
Installing hidden LEDs, wiring and connectors inside the body or base
Adding new light-up areas where there was no lighting before
Cleaning up messy factory wiring and converting to USB power
Because this involves opening the figure or base (and sometimes drilling or cutting inside), the figure must be sent in to be worked on.
